Extending the applicability of an open-ring trap to perform experiments with a single laser-cooled ion

An open-ring ion trap, also referred to as transparent trap was initially built up to perform β\beta-ν\nu correlation experiments with radioactive ions. This trap geometry is also well suited to perform experiments with laser-cooled ions, serving for the development of a new type of Penning trap, in the framework of the project TRAPSENSOR at the University of Granada. The goal of this project is to use a single 40^{40}Ca+^+ ion as detector for single-ion mass spectrometry. Within this project and without any modification to the initial electrode configuration, it was possible to perform Doppler cooling on 40^{40}Ca+^+ ions, starting from large clouds and reaching single ion sensitivity. This new feature of the trap might be important also for other experiments with ions produced at Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facilities. In this publication, the trap and the laser system will be described, together with their performance with respect to laser cooling applied to large ion clouds down to a single ion.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figure

Galactic positrons and electrons from astrophysical sources and dark matter

A very interesting puzzle about the origin of electron and positron cosmic rays is deduced from the latests experimental results. We model the propagation of such cosmic rays in terms of a successfully tested two--zone propagation model. Several theoretical uncertainties -- like ones related to propagation -- are considered to study different types of electron and positron sources: dark matter annihilation, secondary production, and supernova remnants.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure. A Graphical Language for Proof Strategies

Complex automated proof strategies are often difficult to extract, visualise, modify, and debug. Traditional tactic languages, often based on stack-based goal propagation, make it easy to write proofs that obscure the flow of goals between tactics and are fragile to minor changes in input, proof structure or changes to tactics themselves. Here, we address this by introducing a graphical language called PSGraph for writing proof strategies. Strategies are constructed visually by "wiring together" collections of tactics and evaluated by propagating goal nodes through the diagram via graph rewriting. Tactic nodes can have many output wires, and use a filtering procedure based on goal-types (predicates describing the features of a goal) to decide where best to send newly-generated sub-goals. In addition to making the flow of goal information explicit, the graphical language can fulfil the role of many tacticals using visual idioms like branching, merging, and feedback loops. We argue that this language enables development of more robust proof strategies and provide several examples, along with a prototype implementation in Isabelle

Constraints on WIMP Dark Matter from the High Energy PAMELA pˉ/p\bar{p}/p data

A new calculation of the pˉ/p\bar{p}/p ratio in cosmic rays is compared to the recent PAMELA data. The good match up to 100 GeV allows to set constraints on exotic contributions from thermal WIMP dark matter candidates. We derive stringent limits on possible enhancements of the WIMP \pbar flux: a mWIMPm_{\rm WIMP}=100 GeV (1 TeV) signal cannot be increased by more than a factor 6 (40) without overrunning PAMELA data. Annihilation through the W+WW^+W^- channel is also inspected and cross-checked with e+/(e+e+)e^+/(e^-+e^+) data. This scenario is strongly disfavored as it fails to simultaneously reproduce positron and antiproton measurements.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, the bibliography has been updated, minor modifications have been made in the tex

Des cultures temporaires face à la forêt classée. Exemples des paysages à l'ouest du Burkina Faso

    Get PDF

Dark Matter detection via lepton cosmic rays

Recent observations of lepton cosmic rays, coming from the PAMELA and FERMI experiments, have pushed our understanding of the interstellar medium and cosmic rays sources to unprecedented levels. The imprint of dark matter on lepton cosmic rays is the most exciting explanation of both PAMELA's positron excess and FERMI's total flux of electrons. Alternatively, supernovae are astrophysical objects with the same potential to explain these observations. In this work, we present an updated study of the astrophysical sources of lepton cosmic rays and the possible trace of a dark matter signal on the positron excess and total flux of electrons.Comment: 6 pages and 3 figures.
